OK - the reason I've not added anything since 2006 is because I got a new job and took a break from my studies.

Now I have decided to stop the PhD. This is the end folks. I have been overtaken by events.

It is now early May 2006.
Now I am free of paid employment. I left my last position at the end of March 2006 and decided to concentrate my efforts on having a nice long break. My first real break from work in 20 years. I really need it to sort out my home and garden and get back to the PhD. I will have a long think about the direction I need to go in beofre I restart. I have been well off track for a couple of years and need to focus down on a single question and stop looking at every interesting idea.

Current thoughts - write a short introductory literature review, do more analysis then more literature review depending on the outcome.

Now I can use WebCT as well as Blackboard.

Not only can I use it for creating e-learning course given the right materials but I can also do the behind the scenes stuff of setting up courses and users and all the techie bits.

It's months since I wrote anything about this research. The truth is I have lost heart and need to find my way again. I lost my job recently and it was all bound up with the research. This makes it harder to keep focussed as I am looking for a new job or at least will be when I come out of the post job blues.
My supervisors have been quite supportive but it dents the self image to be unemployed. In the meantime Iw ill improve my web development skills by working on up to date CSS techniques in a new conference web page for a low frequency noise bash in autumn 2006.

I also need to clear my stuff from the dining room at home - this is where I dumped all the contents of my office expecting to have a new space in a new building in August. Saldly this was not to be the case so now I have to deal with the 3 filing cabinets full of papers and leaflets plus several desk draws worth of assorted paperwork, and a bookcase full of stuff. My dining room already had the bulk of my PhD collected papers in and is now just full of boxes of unsorted extras. mmmmmmmmmmmm. Not an inviting place to work, eat or live any more.

Must be off now and start sorting - I box at a time.

It's ages since I posted anything and then it was random - nothing about my PhD. It has been on the back burner recently, I've been sorting out what is happening to my job. Not good news - decided that I only wanted to do the Ed. Tech support then found out that i would probably need to apply for a new post if and only if one is made available. Shot myself in the foot this time. I probably wont be working after July at all and now I need to sort out if I have taken any leave and if so how much so that I can take it before I go.

Now I am on an e-moderating course, this is the first week of 4. It will give me an insight into what people are doing in other subject areas. Taking a great deal of time as I'm such a slow reader.

link broken so post removed

Friday, February 18, 2005

Changed my background as previous one had annoying images reloading all the time, part of the template. Some bug I guess.

Have done nothing but write literature review for months now but only have 7 pages to show for all the anguish.

Look at the following and keep up to date:
Wind Turbine Conference 2005

Went to an interesting day at the British Library, a Becta one day conference on HCI and accessibility. Several interesting talks, one on IBM's work on voice recognition post Via voice was extremely hopeful altho' I've heard that sort of hope before and it has not always come to fruition.
Another on a product called Quorum - an excellent tool for sharing / group work with graphics tablets and a wall display. Might be good for maths.
May be possible for some joint work. Think of a proposal!

Can be used remotely too. A product called Dasher for predictive typing for those with difficulties using a keyboard. Can go up to 25 words per minute which isnt too bad. Might download and try it.
Finally, early presentation was useful as it had an interesting triangle on it about usability. Talked to the author - very interesting discussion.

Presented a paper at the MathML and scientific e-content workshop 2004 in Finland - in Kuopio a small town in the Finnish lake district. The workshop showcased the work of people in the Dmath project which follow of from the Xmath project - both EU funded.

Went down quite well. Made useful contacts and found an application for speaking maths: AudioMath.

At last a minute to update this again.
ICME-10 was a great success. My paper went down fine. Several people expressed an interest in setting up a SIG of math teaching online and stuff - an superset of what I need really. However, some are going ahead.
Good contact with SUNY and possible collaborative work there. All fine but tiring and time consuming.

Also went to Prague Internoise 2004 and Maastricht LowFrequency 2004 conferences. Next is 2nd European mathML and Scientific e-content workshop in Kupoio in Finland 16h Sept 2004.

June 30th 2004 - last day of this month and I haven't update this for a whole month.
I have been very busy preparing a paper, poster and presentation for ICME-10 the International Congress on Mathematics Education. In Copenhagen starting 4th July.

It has been a long hard slog and I have definitiely not enjoyed this bit. THe poster is a revision to A0 that now wont fit in the suitcase! if one I did for the internal faculty away day.
The rest is new. Based on preliminary results from the video analysis and my own ideas.
The worst thing is going on my own, no supporters, nobody I know when I get there etc. I dont like travelling alone anyway. I feel quite vunerable.

Lots of paperwork when I get back then a complete rest for a few days.

Thursay 29th April - Briston University RCBN course in Video in Teaching and Learning.
Quite a range of presenters, from sociology and other backgrounds including Maths education and visual anthropology.

Learnt something about how others use video but nothing much new about methods of analysis other than it seems a bit haphazard.

Lots of different methodologies used here even cultural historical stuff (Bristol).

Done absolutely nothing since before Crimbo but have been reading and thinking.
I'll be back in the office tomorrow and then maybe I'll be able to concentrate properly. I have loads of marking and still haven't had the scheme. Perhaps it'll be in my pigeon hole?

Problems with Atlas software. Wont read my DVD files. serious ! must do my notes in word of notepad and import as a transcript or something, new version might help.

Notes on..
1) Modelling behaviour - like an apprentice and master - learns by watching and mentally recording so when in that situation can repeat the steps. cf child - parent scenario. Child becomes parent when faced with own child in same set of circumstances. "I sounded just like my father"

Bought a superior machine to finish the video capture and burn to DVD
Works brilliantly. However, this machine has a duff battery, it shuts down every 10 minutes and needs working on.

Sunday, October 19, 2003

Spent huge amounts of time trying to get the video material from the summer school onto DVD, had to buy a DVD writer, a couple of USB 2 posts, find and install my peerless 20 GB drive to store stuff temporarily. Still takes hours to render.

Only managed to put 2 properly on to DVD and one as simply files. HOpe the new kit will speed up the process and allow video to DVD direct. It could save weeks.
In a very stressed state about it all as I have not really looked at many hours to transcribe stuff yet.

Saturday, October 11, 2003

Decided to take stuff off here if it contains names and private stuff. Some people might be ofended if I use names and places.

Thursday, October 02, 2003

Talked to GA about setting goals and agreed to set a month to complete the video analysis.
Work at home when not teaching.
Have been writing up my field notes in laTeX and this is taking age. Also need to do some sketches for these notes.
Looking at putting in an item for a doctoral strand in a conference.
Need to put in something for maths conference. ICME soon.
Found a website called Nrich - maths enrichment for bright school age childern. Looks promising. Can compare with BBC SOS teacher. have made contact and will visit.

Done internal appraisal.
Found site called WIMS which is good maths site.

Also working on learning LaTeX properly

Sunday, August 10, 2003

All last week I worked on my consultancy and did nothing at all for the PhD. it was hellosh hot slogging away with a laptop on my knees. The gardwen was too hot, The summer house still smells of varnish and was much too hot, Only cool late at night with a fan running all the time.
Phew what a scorcher, Today hottest day on record ever apparently.
I'm still working at 10:30pm and there is no let up. I will try and set up a BLOG for the conference next year so that our colleagues can use it even if they cannot do any HTML

Monday, August 04, 2003

Last week i copied all my mini V tapes to S-VHS
I will now duplicate some to use for looking at again and again and ... to code up.
Need to settle on a coding system I have someting in mind

I am not planning to come in anymore during August. So much to do at home.
I am doing 2 workshops a week during the next 2 semesters
I have cleared out lots of email as my disc is full
I need to reinstate some of my documents to the network drive now.

Got some library books and took some back (engineering stuff) got paid for that too.

Monday again - what happened last week? Saw GA last week on Wednesday? and agreed to do paper for ALT-J. looked out papers on software tools and equations.
Also today met Penny for lunch - she gave me a reference.
Aslo saw GA again and we discussed the paper:

Look at a Dream system for mathematicians, define one. Provide evidence. Look at existing software - does any of it have these features?
What can be done already.
How far is BB and chums from achieving this.

Equipment - probs with Canon - picture breaks up looks like it needs a head clean.

Sun - down to Souuuthampton
Monday - full day videoing lectures and tutorials
Got home and checked tapes and videos - looking good.
Tuesday - arrived late after missing the M3 junction to Soton - Ended up half way to Portsmouth
as Monday
Got a hall room and stayed overnite - (unti Friday)

Lots of material from workshops and tutorials showing different styles of working but core is the fact that many lecturers and students share common papers for showing, explaining and working on problems. even screens are coopted as pseudo paper. Pointing joiuntly to items.

Lecturers use variety of methods - OHP / chalk / data projector , room not ideal. Nice lllittle break out rooms too.

Friday, July 11, 2003

Also Friday - tested cameras, microphone and other equipment to ensure it all works OK.
Need more tapes, mini discs and batteries.
The finalise the list.

Friday - spent may happy hours labelling the tapes and mini discs ready for the recording sessions. Need some more now.

Thursday - lunch meeting with GA postponed
Had long chat with Tom about ethics - he seems OK with it all.

Wednesday/thursday Spoke to Y on phone. Very useful. said focus on research question!
Saw 2 civil people leave/

Wednesday, July 09, 2003

No lunch with Y yesterday. She couldn't come.

All geared up to go to Southampton next week. Much planning to do - checklists for equipment etc.

Tuesday, July 01, 2003

Next phase is to consolidate the work on Usability.
Finally to get BBC stuff in some order.

At last - I spoke to "Yota" and arranged a meeting. She will come over here on 8th July at 1pm for lunch. Now I can work at home tomorrow. Also I talked to John Hitches about the data protection act. I need to make both students and staff aware of this for the videoing stuff.
The final document will need to cover ethics and data protection.

Have been looking at the 2 main engineering text books - the Singh one is great but more limited in scope.

morning blog.
Loads of trivial stuff: email , ordering library books etc.
Good news GA has his post confirmed as continuing. Means I might still be here next year!!
Talked to Maria about students work and plagarism.
Talked to Sarah about "OLAAF" project

Need to get on with proper work! Ethics and descritptive sheet

Tuesday, June 10, 2003

Done nothing to PhD today I must write something about ethics. I emailed a chap Andy S. recommended A.E. at York who is doing something with maths for the blnd. An EU project. LAMBA see today's Guardian for job ad also York's home page Computing dept jobs.

Message today - move all files from local disk partitions c and d: to c:xpbackup
HAVE NOT STARTED THIS AS PARTITION TOO SMALL,
MESSAGE FROM IT: Move all stuff from C drive to backup folder and they will deal with the D partition.

Finished marking - endless spreadsheet erors - buts missing etc. finally done and dusted.

Yesterday - Monday 9th June. Worked all day very hard! Talked to Sarah and David about the OLAAF project - neither of them went to the meeting. Asked Demetra about the meeting apparently she is now in charge. She said she would let me have the notes of the meeting.

Sorted out venue for summer school preliminary meeting

Found out that usability course is 9-6 every day next week. Need to do something about chiropracter! Notes on BB

Deleted lots of old email

Downloaded the papers for the Usability course next week

Wednesday, June 04, 2003

OK I came in having been marking from 7:30am to 9am. The I couldn't park and had to walk miles.

Lunched with penny - she has done her part of the research - it is now up to me to talk to schools.

Talked to Tom Geake about ethics - he had good info - 1 sheet plus suggestions - see word document.

Spent all day backing up D drive. 5 CD's worth. BORING
emailed Sndy - he is away from middle of next week.

Monday, June 02, 2003

bad day - came in for meeting with stuart and it is mext week. Should be marking at home!
Go home and mark!

Thursday, May 29, 2003

Try to get a second camera and lights and directional mike maybe.

Today - Got K. A. to let me into the maths for acousitcs summer school at Southampton. He seemed very positive. I can go to a meeting on 1 3th June to meet them all. Talk to staff and see venue maybe.

Actual summer school is in July 13th - 18th. Brilliant. get cracking with video and audo stuff!

Oh God I got involved in too many side issues: Computer Aided Assessment, Maths and programming languages. Now I have my appraisal coming up. Scared or what? I dont feel that I have contributed to the group very much.

I did a network group yesterday with Celayne and Paul K and Steve M and Dominic H. This was productive as Celayne talked a bit about her PhD. She did field work in Nepal and talked about the process of being there for months with only an occasional letter from her supervisor. Then making sense of the data as she wrote up. Descriptive and linking ideas came at this stage.

Friday, May 23, 2003

Today collected marking and went thru email. Spoke to CPT about paper he emailed n=me about Zack and ? he says he showed it to me before I went away to naples.

COnference / journal home for CAA paper for DW

Tuesday, May 13, 2003

Did some poking about to find details of author guidelines for Computers and Education so i can submit a paper there.

OK so today I talked to Martin C. about doing the Mathtype study
We decided to do a quick and focussed study using Mathtype and 2 other products for comparison. Efofex and say MathCAD.

He suggested we hired a lab at UCL or NPL now called circo usability and paid people. Use screen recordings / talk trus and videoing participants/sessions.

Good idea - sent him my stuff from Trieste and will revisit my paperwork - do this after the naples trip on Thursday.
Should get engineering and maths staff and some school teachers - throw in some industrial users for balance if we can get some retured ones or authors of maths books perhaps.

Welcome to my PhD diaries started 9th April 2003
This should be a record - if I fill it in - of my work on mathematical dialoges on line.
Today I am filing various papers and reading a book on mathematics and multimedia by 2 US maths teachers - only just started.
I also need to set up some videoing sessions - get in touch with various schools to get permission.
